Schools Programme funding received

mcgfThree weeks ago Wellington Ocean Sports secured a $20,000 grant from the Mana Community Grants Foundation as part of our wider push for funding to support our School Safe Boating Programme. This funding is specifically for students from the Porirua area and on Friday 26 June delivery commenced with students from He Huarahi Tamariki School.


Wellington Ocean Sports Staff complete Workplace First Aid

image5In the last week, Wellington Ocean Sports hosted a Workplace First Aid which was run by James Allen, from Training Innovations. Three instructors Sam Price, Holly Novis and Graeme Mercer completed the course along with a Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club Volunteer, Malcom Baxter. Joining the course was also a team from TSS Motor Cycles and Diesel Equipment Services Ltd.


Advanced Sea Survival running in August


20120604Ass1Thinking of doing an offshore next season??? Now is the time of the year to square away an Advanced Sea Survival Course. Wellington Ocean Sports next course will be running over the weekend of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August 2015. Advanced Sea Survival is a comprehensive theoretical and practical course required by crew competing in Category 1 offshore races. The course is ISAF and Yachting New Zealand approved and held over one weekend.


Only Coastal Medic Course for the year available for booking


New Image CBESA new Coastguard Coastal Medic Course has been announced for the weekend of 29 and 30 August 2015. Coastal Medic is a prerequisite to the more advance Offshore Medic.  As well as its marine applications, this course exceeds the Health and Safety requirements of “two day workplace first aid”, so has many commercial usages. 


July Boatmaster available for booking

 boatmaster{jcomments off}It's now only a little over a month until Wellington Ocean Sports last  Boatmaster course of the winter commences. Boatmaster is a comprehensive theory only course covering all the esentials you need including - safety, equipment, weather, rules of the road and navigation.


Last winter VHF course available for booking

holly vhf second{jcomments off}Did you know that unless it as an emergency, it is a legal requirement to have a Radio Operators Qualification before operating a marine VHF radio? If you need to get the qualification then we have the course for you! Our last VHF course for the winter is running over the evenings of 31 August and 2 September and is now available for booking.


Crew Available!!

raceCalling all RPNYC skippers and boat owners!!! Wellington Ocean Sports teach approximately 200 adults to sail each year, the majority of these students go on to join the Club with the hope of crewing on members boats. We currently have a bunch of new grads who are keen to get out on the water and we are looking for places on members boats for the upcoming winter series. RPNYC skippers who are prepared to take on a grad are a vital part of transitioning grads to long term Club membership, so please consider if you could assist.

Porirua College Students Learn the Ropes

NCEA Dayskipper knotsOver the last 3 weeks 14 students from Porirua College have been undertaking our Coastguard Day Skipper course as part of our ‘Schools Safe Boating Programme’ taught by Wellington Ocean Sports instructor John Schuyt. Day Skipper is a 15 hour theory course applicable to all forms of boating. The course educates the students on all the essential boating knowledge and safety skills. Covering many important topics including parts of the boat, navigation, rules and regulations, emergency procedures and knots. Those who successfully complete the course with obtain Coastguard Day Skipper certification and six, level 2 NCEA credits.


WOS Winter Racing

skills croppedRacing is the best way to improve your sailing skills. Whether or not you are competitive or into sailing around the buoys, there is nothing like actually having to get the boat to a fixed point as a group to develop your skills. Winter is also one of the best times for racing as the Winter Series see’s some of the biggest fleet sizes of the year and as racing is held fortnightly it doesn’t take up all your spare time. Wellington Ocean Sports host SUP instructors course

NZSUP photoWellington Ocean Sports recently hosted the ‘International Surfing Association Flat Water SUP Instructor course’ which three of our instructors completed.The course was an incredibly valuable, thorough course where instructor Bill Dawes took Wellington Ocean Sports instructors Holly Novis, Sam Price and Frankie Kebbell through venue safety analysis, paddle techniques, fault correction, beginner, intermediate and also more advanced lesson styles and skills.
